COUNCIL 40 SCHOLARSHIPS. . .Local secretaries have been sent the
announcement for the upcoming
round of competition in the Council 40 Memorial Scholarship Program. Ten separate
scholarships worth
a total of $24,000 will be awarded during the 2008-2009 academic year. These scholarships
are an
important benefit of Council 40 membership. Theyre intended to enable more of our
members, their
spouses and children to receive educational opportunities they might otherwise miss
because of financial
constraints. Secretaries will receive a complete set of scholarship rules and flyers for
union bulletin
boards. Please post the flyers and share the scholarship information at upcoming union
meetings.
Potential applicants need to contact our Madison Headquarters for application forms.
STAFF MEETINGS COMING UP. . .Most of our field staff will be attending a
staff training meeting in
Milwaukee Monday, October 22 ,through Wednesday, October 24. If you need to reach your
staff rep
during those days please understand that there may be a small delay in responding. As

HURLEY. . .City of Hurley Police Officers and DPW employees, members of
Local 728-A, in separate
bargaining units recently settled 3-year contracts. Wages will increase 3% on 1/1/08.
Sergeants and patrol
officers will get an extra 7¢/hour before the general increase. Additional 3% pay hikes
are scheduled for
1/1/09 and 1/1/10. The City will continue to pay 100% of the single and family health
insurance premiums.
A new vision insurance plan was added with the City paying the premiums. The vacation
improved by
providing 4 weeks after 12 years (was 15 years) and 5 weeks after 17 years (was 20 years).
One
additional day will be provided for each year after 20 (was 21) up to a maximum of 6
weeks. Recall after
layoff was lengthened to years of service (was 2 year recall). Funeral leave was also
improved.
MANITOWOC. . .Members of Local 731 who work at the Manitowoc Wastewater
Treatment Plant recently
ratified back-to-back contracts covering five years. Wages were increased 2% retroactive
to 1/1/05 and
1.5% back to 9/1/05. Additional 3% increases were provided retro to 1/1/06 and 1/1/07. In
2008 and 2009
wages will increase 3% on 1/1 or 90% of the increase in the cost of living in the previous
year, whichever
is greater. The employer will pay 90% of the single and family health insurance premiums
(was 95% family
and 100% single). In trade for the lower premium payment, longevity pay was increased by
5¢/hour in
2007, 6¢ in 2008 and 7¢ in 2009, among other wage improvements. Many language
improvements were
also part of the new agreement.
SUPERIOR. . .Housing Authority employees in Superior, members of Local 244-A
have a new 2008-2010
contract. Wages will increase 3% on 1/1 in each of the 3 years. The working foreman
classification will get
an extra $1.50/hour on 7/1/08. The employer will continue to pay 100% of the health
insurance premiums.
On-call pay increased from $160/week to $170 effective 1/1/09. The employer will also
contribute $250/
year to a flex benefit account regardless of whether the employee participates in the
health insurance plan.
