IN MEMORIAM. . .Sheboygan County labor leader Marvin
Grosskreutz died last week at age 87. Brother
Grosskreutz helped organize Sheboygan County Highway Department Local 1749 in 1966.
Thereafter,
he helped organize the other Sheboygan County bargaining units. He served as
Vice-President and later
President of Local 1749, until he retired in 1983. Governor Patrick Lucey appointed
him to the State
Retirement Board in 1973 where he served for many years. AFSCME members in Sheboygan
County
rightly feel a sense of gratitude to Marvin Grosskreutz for his key role in bringing them
into the labor
movement.
BOARD MEETING MINUTES. . .Council 40 Executive Board meeting minutes of
August 11, 2007, are
being sent to all local/chapter secretaries. Minutes of the October 18 Board meeting
will be sent after they
are approved in December.
EDUCATION CONFERENCE. . .We are accepting late registrations for our
November 2-3 Education
Conference at the Hotel Mead in Wisconsin Rapids. Call the Council Headquarters or
download the form
at our website and fax it to us. You can bring the $25 registration fee to the conference.
THE WISCONSIN WAY. . .The next couple of Wisconsin Way public discussion
forums are set for
October 30 in Green Bay, and November 1 in Superior. Learn about the serious economic and
public
policy challenges facing Wisconsin citizens and possible solutions. All Wisconsin AFSCME
Councils are
urging members to participate in these forums. For more information go to www.wisconsinway.org.
COMBINED LOCKS. . .DPW employees who work for the Village of Combined Locks,
members of Local
2046, have a new three-year contract. Wages were increased 3% retroactive to 1/1/07. An
additional 3%
pay hike is set for 1/1/08 to be followed by 2.5% on 1/1/09 and 1.5% on 7/1/09. For health
insurance, the
Village will pay 92% for single and family coverage in 2007. In 2008 and 2009 the Village
will pay 91%
and 90%. Mechanics clothing allowance went from $250/year to $500. The funeral leave
provision was
also improved.
HURLEY. . .Custodial, clerical and food service employees who work for the
Hurley School District,
members of Local 728-B, recently ratified a new contract. Wages were increased 3.8%
retroactive to
7/1/07. Another 3% wage increase is set for 7/1/08. The District has agreed to continue
paying 90% of
the single and family health insurance premiums with no change in the plan.
