INTERMEDIATE STEWARD TRAINING. . .The International Union in cooperation
with Council 40 is
sponsoring a free one-day Intermediate Steward Training Workshop set for Saturday,
March 31, 2007, at
the AFSCME Headquarters Building in Madison. Covered will be new developments
in labor laws,
contract administration, grievance handling/problem solving, advanced arbitration
standards, and internal
organizing. Stewards and Officers and those aspiring to leadership roles should attend. Written

SCHOOL FOR WORKERS. . .Enclosed for Presidents and Secretaries is a brochure
announcing the
Spring '07 lineup of classes offered by the UW Extension School for Workers. Among the

ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETINGS. . .The Council 40 Street & Highway Workers,
Health & Safety,
and Women's Advisory Committees are meeting in Eau Claire at the 29 Pines/Sleep
Inn & Suites on
March 9, 2007 beginning at 10:00 a.m. The main purpose of the meetings is to
plan a joint Educational
Conference for early November.
AFSCME NATIONAL NURSES CONGRESS. . .The United Nurses of America (UNA) 11th
National
Nurses Congress will be held in Washington, DC, on May 6-7, 2007.
Here's a reminder that Council 40
will pay the lost wages, travel, lodging, and related costs for up to two Registered
Nurses or Licensed
Practical Nurses to participate in the National Nurses Congress. To be eligible, the
Council 40 nurse must,
at least by the time of the event, be a member of AFSCME PEOPLE at the MVP level.
Preference will be
given to members who have not attended this event before. If interested, write
to Council 40 President
Michael Murphy by March 28, 2007.
ANTIGO. . .City of Antigo DPW employees, members of Local 1192, recently
ratified a new three-year
contract. Wages were increased 2.5% on 1/1/07. Another 2.5% pay hike is set for 1/1/08 and
another
2.75% on 1/1/09. The City agreed to continue paying 90% of the single and family health
insurance
premiums. The uniform and boot allowance went from $100 to $250. Funeral leave was
improved.
STEVENS POINT. . .DPW workers, members of Local 309 in Stevens Point settled
their 2005-2006
contract. Wages were increased 3% retro to 1/1/05 and another 3% back to 1/1/06. The City
paid 90% of
the single and family health insurance premiums. Significant new CDL language was added to
the
contract which will go far to protect the jobs of drivers whose CDLs are suspended or
revoked because of
off-duty problems.
DISTRICT #7. . .Here's a reminder that the District #7 Spring Conference is
scheduled for Saturday, 3/24,
at the VFW, 120 W. Park St., Rhinelander. Registration, coffee, and rolls at 9:30 a.m.,
call-to-order at
10:00 a.m., lunch at 12:00 noon, call-to-order at 1:00 p.m. The agenda
includes a preview of Council
40's Convention, discussion of Spring elections, and reports from the Officers, Executive
Board members,
and Staff Representatives.
