COUNCIL 40 CONVENTION. . .Our 64th Annual Convention in Wisconsin Dells last weekend was a
great success. In all 360 delegates representing 153 locals and chapters and carrying 21,283 votes
assembled to elect a new Executive Board and pass 23 policy resolutions and 13 honorary resolutions.
Copies of all resolutions will be sent to all local and chapter secretaries next week. Also in attendance
were Council 40 and International staff and 112 observers and guests. Our keynote speaker again this
year was AFSCME President Gerald McEntee.

NEW BOARD MEMBERS. . .Congratulations to newly elected Council 40 Executive Board members;
District #2, Mark Gronholm, Racine City Local 67; District #6, Matt Staudenmaier, Eau Claire City
Local 284; District #8, Nancy Anderson, Polk County Local 774; and District #8, Ed Lambert, Superior
City Local 235. And, congratulations to the rest of the Board and Officers who won re-election by
acclamation! Thanks to the retiring Board members, Bob Bennett, Sherry Brown, Earl Monnier, and
Sharon Blanding

WORKERS MEMORIAL DAY. . .In anticipation of Workers Memorial Day, April 28, delegates to the
Convention honored the memory of the 42 Council 40 members who have been killed on the job since
1982. As we mourn the dead, we must redouble our struggle for safer workplaces.

AFSCME FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP WINNER. . .Congratulations to Ben Brendler for winning one of the
13 AFSCME Family Scholarships for 2007. Ben is the son of Kathy Brendler, a member of Dane County
Local 720. Ben will receive $2,000 per year to help pay for four years of college. A copy of Ben's award
winning essay will appear in an upcoming edition of AFSCME Reports.

STEWARD TRAINING IN SUPERIOR. . .The International Union in cooperation with Council 40 will
sponsor a free one-day Steward Training Workshop in Superior on Saturday, May 5, 2007. Covered
will be public sector labor laws, contract administration, grievance investigation, arbitration standards,
internal organizing, and related matters. Advance registration must be received by May 2. For details and

MEMBER IN NEED OF HELP. . .City of Madison employee Randy Wiesner and his daughter are in the
Burn Unit of the UW Hospital after a bad car accident last week. Randy has broken ribs, spinal injuries,
and a broken arm, among other injuries, and his daughter has severe burns. The Wiesners had already
been beset with other health problems that had strained the family's finances. A fund has been established
