COUNCIL 40 CONVENTION. . .Our 65th Annual Convention in Stevens Point
last week was a great
success. 292 delegates representing 122 locals and chapters and
carrying 17,911 votes assembled to
assess the state of our union and pass 2 Constitutional Amendments, 17 policy
resolutions, and 8 honorary
resolutions which will be sent to all local and chapter secretaries next week.
Also in attendance were Council
40, Council 11, and International Staff and 103 observers and guests.
DELEGATES SUPPORT UNION BROTHERS. . .Convention delegates “passed
the hat” and donated
$790 to help defray significant legal expenses incurred by state correctional
officers. The officers were falsely
accused of abuse by inmates under the state’s “John Doe” law. AFSCME supports
and respects inmate
rights, but the law as currently written encourages some inmates to file false
charges as a means of
harassment against corrections employees. The three Wisconsin AFSCME councils
are currently lobbying
the state to modify the John Doe law and to provide legal protection to
government employees wrongly
accused of abuse. Many thanks to all who donated.
WORKERS MEMORIAL DAY. . .In anticipation of Workers Memorial Day,
April 28, delegates to the
Convention honored the memory of 44 Council 40 members killed on the job since
1982. The first Workers
Memorial Day was observed in 1989. April 28 was chosen because it is the
anniversary of the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration and the day of a similar remembrance in Canada.
Every year, people in
hundreds of communities across the nation recognize workers who have been killed
or injured on the job.
POLITICAL ACTION AWARDS. . .In recognition of their hard work
during the past year, several Local Union
volunteers received political action awards. A list of those honored for their
hard campaign and lobbying work
is shown below.
EXECUTIVE BOARD MINUTES. . .Secretaries have been sent copies of
the approved minutes of the
February Executive Board meeting held in Madison.
RACINE ELECTION WIN. . .A few weeks ago, City of Racine Library
employees voted for AFSCME
Council 40 representation. Due to the City’s challenge of certain ballots, the
Wisconsin Employment
Relations Commission was not able to certify the results until earlier this
week. Great credit for this victory
goes to the leaders of City of Racine Employees Union Local 67, Council
40 members Joan Kaeding,
Bruce Wery, and Thomas Campbell, Organizer Mary Burpee, and
Staff Representatives Nick Kasmer
and Mike Wilson. Welcome Racine Library employees!
JOHNSON CREEK ELECTION WIN. . .Village of Johnson Creek employees
voted 6 to 3 for AFSCME
Council 40 representation. Eleven workers are in the bargaining unit. Staff
Representative Jenny McCulley
and Organizer Mary Burpee deserve particular credit for this victory.
Welcome Village of Johnson Creek
employees!
