LEADERSHIP TRAINING INSTITUTE. . .Council 40 in cooperation with the
University of Wisconsin
School for Workers and the International Union will sponsor another Basic
Leadership Training Institute
this year to be held on the U.W. Madison campus, September 23-28. It is
open to current leaders of locals
or chapters who have not attended the Institute before. The local union's cost is only
$200 per participant,
with Council 40 and the International Union paying for tuition, meals, lodging, parking,
travel, and lost
wages for the week-long program. The class schedule and registration information will be
sent to all
affiliates later this summer. For further information in the meantime, contact your staff
rep or the Madison
office.
AMENDMENTS AND RESOLUTIONS. . .Copies of the 23 policy resolutions and 13
honorary resolutions
passed at the Council 40 Convention this month are being sent to all Local/Chapter
Secretaries. A set of
all Convention documents and reports is being sent to secretaries of all Locals/Chapters
not represented
by a delegate of their own at the Convention. For additional copies, please contact the
Madison office.
JERRY CLARK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. . .The International Union has announced
the 2007 Jerry
Clark Memorial Scholarship program for the children and grandchildren of AFSCME members
who want a
career working for social and economic justice. It's a good one, worth $5,000 each for two
students with a
social science major for their senior or junior college years. A chance to intern at the
AFSCME head-
quarters is also part of the award. Jerry Clark, a Wisconsin native, led AFSCME's
Political Action
Department for nearly 20 years. For details and an application form for this and other

WAUSAU. . .DPW employees, members of Local 1287, who work for the City of
Wausau recently ratified
a new two-year contract. Wages were increased 2% retro to 1-1-07. Another 1% pay increase
is set for
7-1-07. Next year wages will increase again by 2% on 1-1-08 and 7-1-08. The
classifications of Parking
Facility Coordinator, Sewer Construction Worker II and Trade Tech I received an extra
6¢/hour. Longevity
pay was increased by $5.00/month for each step and a new 25-year step was added worth
$55/month.
The City agreed to continue paying 92% of the single and family health insurance premiums.
A new cold
weather gear provision was added worth $50/year.
ASHLAND. . .City of Ashland DPW workers, members of Local 216-A, have a new
2007-2009 contract.
Wages were increased 2% retroactive to 1-1-07. Another 0.5% increase is set for 7-1-07. A
3% pay hike is
scheduled for 1-1-08 and another 3% increase will be applied on 1-1-09. Engineering
Technicians were
added to the bargaining unit. The City agreed to continue paying 85% of the single and
family health
insurance premiums and 90% of the single and family dental insurance premiums. Clothing
allowance
went from $150/year to $175 in 2008 and $200 in 2009. Several language improvements were
part of the
settlement.
