IN MEMORIAM. . .Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of
Susie Dewhirst, a member of Local 130,
who works for the Coulee Region School District. Her son, Nick Dewhirst, 25,
died on Sunday, July 20, 2008,
of injuries received when his Army convoy came under small arms and RPG fire in
the Khost Province of
Afghanistan. Nick was deployed to Afghanistan in March 2008 with the 101st
Airborne, Division of Fort
Campbell, KY. An Eagle Scout, Nick was a 2001 graduate of Onalaska High School,
where he was a member
of the National Honor Society and student council. After a year at Embry-Riddle
Aeronautical University in
Daytona Beach, FL, Nick received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at
West Point and graduated
in 2006 with a degree in mechanical engineering. His military awards included
the National Defense Service
Medal, the Army Achievement Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
MURPHY RE-ELECTED IVP. . .On July 31, at the International Union
Convention in San Francisco, Council
40's President, Michael Murphy, was re-elected to his fifth term as
International Union Vice President for
Wisconsin after fending off an able challenger from Council 48. He is one of
only 32 IVP’s on the International
Union Executive Board representing AFSCME members throughout the country.

AFSCME FAMILY SCHOLARSHIPS. . .The International Union has
announced the 2009 scholarship
program for children of AFSCME members. Thirteen scholarships of $2,000 each
will be awarded. The
scholarships will be renewed for $2,000 each year for up to four years, provided
the student remains enrolled
in a full-time degree program at an accredited institution. For copies of the
application form, you should
contact AFSCME Family Scholarship Program, c/o Education Department, 1625 L
Street NW, Washington,
DC 20036 or go to the AFSCME website at
www.afscme.org/members/880.cfm.
Applications must be
postmarked no later than December 31, 2008. Scholarship winners will be
announced by March 31, 2009.
FINANCIAL STATEMENTS. . .Secretaries are being sent the Council 40
Financial Statements for the first
two quarters of 2008 ending June 30, 2008. At the end of the second quarter, the
Council’s operating
revenue from PCT and other sources were $3,316,832. Total operating expenses
stood at $3,213,642.
For the same period, the PEOPLE Fund Revenue was $136,980. Total operating
expenses were $111,062.
