LABOR DAY CELEBRATIONS. . .Monday, September 1, is Labor Day - our holiday! Don your AFSCME
green shirt and celebrate the day proudly. If you get some photos and stories about your Local’s participation
in your community’s Labor Day festivities, send them to us, and we’ll try to put them in an upcoming edition of
AFSCME Reports.

STAFF MEETINGS COMING UP. . .Most of our field staff will be attending a staff training meeting in Elkhart
Lake from Wednesday, September 3, through Friday, September 5. If you need to reach your staff rep during
those days, please understand that there may be a small delay in responding. As always, if there is a problem
that can’t wait, contact the Madison Headquarters.

LA CROSSE COUNTY VICTORY. . .After a long fight, Council 40 has taken representation rights from the
Wisconsin Professional Police Association (WPPA) for approximately 45 jailers employed by La Crosse
County. The vote was AFSCME - 37, WPPA - 2. Many deserve credit for this win, including, but not limited to,
Organizer Mary Burpee, Staff Reps Thor Backus, Dan Pfeifer, and Kristen Clark, Political Action Rep
Jason Sidener
, and Executive Board Member Janice Bobholz.

EXECUTIVE BOARD AGENDA. . .Secretaries are being sent the preliminary agenda for the Council 40
Executive Board meeting set for September 18 at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton
.
This agenda includes all items known to us as of August 21. Additional items could be added before or
during the meeting.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING INSTITUTE. . .Council 40, along with the University of Wisconsin - Extension
School for Workers, will hold an Advanced Leadership Training Institute, October 19-25, on the UW
Campus
. Local Union leaders who have already attended the Basic Leadership Training Institute are
eligible to participate in the advanced class. An informative agenda covering all aspects of union leadership
is being planned. Detailed information and enrollment forms will be sent to local union secretaries by the
early part of next month. The cost to locals for each participant will be only $200. Council 40, with assistance
from the International Union, will pay for the rest, including tuition, class materials, room and board (double
occupancy), mileage reimbursement, and lost wages for the week.
